Maccabi Tel Aviv buyers linked to Russian arms concern

"Yediot Ahronot" reports that Alex Shnaider and Eduard Shyfrin are partners in a subsidiary of Rosoboronexport.

"Yediot Ahronot" reports that Alex Shnaider and Eduard Shyfrin, the two oligarchs and new owners of the Maccabi Tel Aviv Football Club, are partners in a metal company that is part of the Russian government defense corporation Rosoboronexport.

Midland Resources Holding Ltd., through which Shnaider and Shifrin own the Maccabi Tel Aviv Football Club, became a partner in the Russian company a year ago. The company supplies metal to Rosoboronexport whose customers include Iran, Syria, Angola, Malaysia, China, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela. Last year, this company sold Iran 29 antiaircraft systems, and signed an $11 billion contract with Syria for 36 antiaircraft systems.

Midland's acquisition of 80% of Maccabi Tel Aviv last month from Eylon "Lonny" Herzikowicz for NIS 60 million attracted considerable media attention.
