Knesset finance committee chairman Moshe Gafni met secretly yesterday with Governor of the Bank of Israel Prof. Stanley Fischer, Supervisor of Banks Rony Hizkiyahu, and a representative of each political party represented on the committee, to discuss the recent occurrences at Bank Hapoalim (LSE: BKHD; TASE: POLI).
There was supposed to be a meeting on the subject today, but it was cancelled after Gafni and Fischer agreed to meet in the smaller forum.
Committee sources said that the subject was impossible to ignore, despite a Bank of Israel request no to reopen the issue, after a compromise was reached with Bank Hapoalim. Fischer reviewed the case with committee members and said that the Bank of Israel did not get involved in the personal issues until it became concerned that problems at the bank were not being dealt with.
