Bread prices rise

The price hike is due to a sharp jump in wheat prices around the world.

The government is again raising the price of bread. The 3.55% increase in the price of price-controlled breads will come into effect tomorrow.

Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor Supervisor of Prices Zvia Dori signed the directive. She said that the price hike was due the sharp rise in the global price of wheat, which in turn has raised the price of flour, a amajor cost item of bread.

The price of the 750-gram standard white bread loaf will rise to NIS 4.60 from NIS 4.44; the price of 500-gram challah will rise to NIS 5.02 from NIS 4.84; and the price of the standard sliced white bread loaf will rise to NIS 6.90 from NIS 6.66.

The Ministry of Industry said that the price of price-controlled breads was cut three times and raised once during 2009. It added that, even after tomorrow's price hike, bread prices will be 3.5% less than in April 2008.
