PayPal launches in Hebrew

PayPal Inc. today launched a Hebrew-language website PayPal Israel, which includes customer service in Hebrew and an Israeli telephone number.

PayPal, a unit of eBay Inc. (Nasdaq: EBAY) began offering e-commerce in shekels in mid-2008, and in late 2009 also allowed businesspeople to transfer money from a PayPal account to an Israeli bank account.

"We see that in markets were PayPal services are launched in the local language, e-commerce among both consumers and business surged," said PayPal president Scott Thompson. "We recognize the importance of the Israeli market and we're sure that this launch will contribute to a real revolution in all matters related to online payments in Israel."

In early 2008, PayPal acquired Israeli start-up Fraud Sciences, which developed security products for online transactions, and now functions as PayPal's R&D center in this area. The center employs 80 engineers and development managers.
