Medtronic CEO visits Rambam hospital

Hawkins was interested to hear about the extent to which the government allows the development of independent research at the hospital.

Medical device company Medtronic chairman and CEO William A. Hawkins recently paid an extensive visit to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.

Hawkins was accompanied by senior company representatives from Europe and Israel.

Hawkins met with senior management of the hospital. Rambam CEO Prof. Rafi Beyar reviewed a variety of advanced medical research projects taking place at the hospital, particularly in the fields of imaging, stroke treatment, trauma and embryonic stem cell research.

Hawkins was interested to hear about the hospital's ability to conduct its own research and the extent to which the government of Israel allows the development of independent research at the hospital.

The visitors also toured the stem cells laboratory where Prof. Lior Gebstein, from Rambam and the Technion, is working on applied research using stem cells, to repair damage to the heart muscle.
