Schocken: If it's "Haaretz" fate to be closed, better now

Publisher Amos Schoken: To save "Haaretz", we must take difficult steps that do not bring joy to anyone.

"Haaretz" publisher slammed the newspaper's workers committee today, ahead of a planned meeting, accusing the committee of lying and failing to understand reality. "In recent years, I have made a huge effort to guarantee the existence of 'Haaretz', its ability to continue to fulfill its unique role in Israeli society, and as a reasonable workplace," he wrote.

"We are not seeking these layoffs, and you know this. (By the way, the proportion of layoffs is no higher than what "The New York Times" was forced to undertake to preserve its quality). They were also forced on us. To save 'Haaretz', we must take difficult steps that do not bring joy to anyone.

"It's shame that after so many conversations (not to mention what we read in the newspaper that you write), you have not yet grasped the business reality in which we operate, which has changed unrecognizably, and which forces us to act.

"But if it is the fate of 'Haaretz' to close, it is better that it should be closed now, rather than in a few months like 'Ma'ariv", and if anyone does not understand this, it is hard to understand what he is doing in journalism at all."
