Lapid: We'll stop stipends for yeshiva students

The High Court of Justice issued an injunction banning stipends to yeshiva students whose IDF enlistment has been deferred.

On Tuesday evening, Minister of Finance Yair Lapid announced, "Following the ruling by the High Court of Justice we will stop the payment of stipends to yeshiva students whose draft into the IDF has been deferred until the equal sharing of the burden [law] has been passed."

On Tuesday, a panel of nine High Court of Justice judges held a hearing on petitions filed by several NGOs on the drafting of yeshiva students following the expiry of the Tal Law, which allowed yeshiva students to defer their military service. The court, under President Asher Grunis, ordered the government to publish an update by March 31. "So long as new legislation is not completed on the matter of drafting yeshiva students, we will consider the consequences of this," stated the judges.

The High Court of Justice also issued a temporary injunction banning the government from making financial transfers "to support yeshivas with regard to yeshiva students who were born in 1994-95 and the first half of 1996, who have received draft notices for various dates from August 2013, and who have not been drafted because of general decisions by the Minister of Defense… to defer their enlistment." The decision was eight to one.
