School year to begin on September 1

Starting the school year in the last week of August will not be repeated.

The Ministry of Education today announced that, beginning from the 2014-15 school year, the school year again will begin on September 1. Minister of Education Shai Piron approved the recommendations of the committee on the subject. The decision ends the one-year experiment of bringing forward the start of the school year to the last week of August.

The committee for establishing vacations discussed arrangements for parents. The decision to return to the September 1 starting date was proposed by the Teachers Union.

The four extra vacations days for teachers at the end of summer will be offset by reducing the Hannukah vacation by one day, the Passover vacation by two days, and the Lag B'Omer vacation by one day.
