Israel refused to accept the cease-fire after Hamas continued firing rockets after the deadline.

Hamas has unilaterally declared a 24-hour humanitarian cease-fire starting at 2 pm. The Palestinian announcement came after Israel had acceded to a UN request yesterday for a cease-fire till midnight, but Hamas kept firing rockets.

The IDF decided to wait and see if Hamas honored the truce it had proclaimed and would stops firing over the Negev and southern Israel. Initial signs were not good with Hamas continuing rocket fire after 2 pm.

Hamas seems to have given up on its previous demand that Israel must withdraw from the parts of the Gaza Strip that the IDF has occupied during the ground offensive and stop blowing up its underground tunnels.Towards evening there was heavy rocket fire on Ashkelon, Beersheva and the Negev.
