Haifa's Sammy Ofer soccer stadium and Jerusalem Payis basketball arena were inaugurated last night.

Israel's two most expensive ever new sports stadiums were by coincidence both inaugurated last night.

30,000 soccer fans came to Sammy Ofer Stadium in Haifa last night to see Maccabi Haifa beat Bnei Sakhnin 4-2 in the opening round of the 2014/15 Ligat Ha'al season. The stadium was built at a cost of NIS 525 million.

Meanwhile in Jerusalem the 11,600-seat Payis Arena hosted its first competitive basketball match when Hapoel Jerusalem beat Hapoel Holon 86-61 in the quarter final of the Winner Cup. The arena cost NIS 398 million to build.

These amounts dwarf the costs of other new stadiums built in recent years - the Moshava soccer stadium in Petah Tikva (NIS 140 million) and the Netanya soccer stadium (NIS 120 million). The new swimming pool at the Wingate Institute near Netanya cost NIS 105 million.
