The number has risen from 8,730,562 last Rosh Hashana, reports the Interior Ministry.

On the eve of 5775, the Ministry of Interior's Population and Immigration Registry reports that Israel has 8,904,373 citizens, up 173,811 from 8,730,562 on the eve of last Rosh Hashana. During 5754, 24,801 new immigrants reached Israel.

These figures are way above the nearly 8.2 million Israelis reported by the Central Bureau of Statistics on the eve of Independence Day in May. The difference relates to the number of citizens (Ministry of Interior) and the number of residents (Central Bureau of Statistics).

The Ministry of Interior's Population and Immigration Registry also reported that the most popular name given to Jewish baby boys in Israel over the past year was Yosef, followed by Daniel, Ori, Itay, Omer, Adam, Noam, Ariel, Eitan and David. The most popular girl's name was Noa followed by Shira, Adel, Talia, Yael, Lian, Miriam, Maya, and Avigal. 90,646 boys were born over the past year and 85,584 girls.
