Former Tel Aviv Mayor Shlomo Lahat dies

Lahat was mayor for 19 years and coined the slogan, "the city that never stops."

Shlomo Lahat, the legendary former Tel Aviv Mayor, died last night aged 86. Lahat suffered from Alzheimer's and was hospitalized last week with a serious lung infection.

He served as Tel Aviv Mayor for 19 years after first being elected in 1974 representing the Liberal party within the Likud. He was re-elected for three more terms in 1978, 1983 and 1989 and reportedly coined the slogan, "The city that never stops."

Lahat was born in 1927 in Germany and came to Israel with his family in 1933 just before the Nazis came to power. He served in the Palmach and IDF, fighting in all Israel's major wars before retiring as a highly decorated general in 1972.

He is survived by his wife Ziva and two children, one of whom is Tel Aviv council member Dan Lahat.
