Road safety cut in favor of speed cameras

Part of the Israel National Road Safety Authority's budget is being transferred to the police for cameras.

The Israel National Road Safety Authority (RSA) has, from the start, been one of the primary advocates of the A3 speed camera project, and even once called for the project to be expanded. However, it now seems that this matter has come to haunt them. In the new budget proposal submitted today, it is recommended that NIS 25 million be cut from the National Road Safety Authority’s annual budget, starting in 2015.

From this amount, NIS 7 million “will be transferred to the Ministry of Internal Security's (Police) regular budget, to finance the ongoing expansion of the A3 project for electronic road enforcement.”

Even prior to the current budget cut, the RSA faced a severe funding crisis, due to broad cuts in its budget, and the RSA chairman expressed doubt regarding the Authority’s ability to continue to operate as an independent entity within the current budget.

Recently published data indicate a rise in traffic accidents, while the police increasingly focus on installing the new cameras, and there has been a 49% rise in traffic accidents involving pedestrians.
