Israel Railways is upgrading six railway stations around the country.

The Green Construction company has won a NIS 17 million tender to upgrade the Tel Aviv Hashalom railway station, sources inform "Globes." The purpose of the upgrade is to improve passenger service and safety. Work will begin by the end of the year, and continue for 18 months. The railway station will remain active during the upgrade.

Work will include the addition of a structure to be used by passengers exiting the railway platforms to the south side of the Shalom bridge over the Ayalon Highway, including a bicycle parking facility on the bridge level. The elevator shaft will be moved north from the existing building in the station.

The number of railway passengers has been rising continuously since 2011 (7.5% more passengers in 2014 than in 2013). Israel Railways has therefore devised a plan to upgrade its stations all over Israel. Among other things, railway stations in the Hof Carmel in Haifa, Binyamina, Pardes Hanna-Caesarea, Hadera, Netanya, Rehovot, and elsewhere will be renovated.

The Tel Aviv Arlosoroff Central Station and Tel Aviv Hashalom Station, the largest railway stations in Israel, are considered a railway bottleneck. According to a study commissioned by Israel Railways, 70% of the passengers using a train pass through these stations. Last June, Danya Cebus Ltd. (TASE: DNYA) won a NIS 31.8 million tender to upgrade the Tel Aviv Central Station.

"Adding another exit from the largest railway station in Israel is a significant step for tens of thousands of our customers using this station," Israel Railways CEO Boaz Tzafrir said. "The stations are our meeting point with the company's customers, and the gate from which they enter and exit to and from the platforms and the trains."
