Ashkelon gets new neighborhood

11,500 housing units will be built in the north of the city. 2,400 units are planned for Or Yehuda.

The government continues to expedite residential construction projects. The National Planning and Building Committee for Priority Residential Sites headed by Eran Nitzan decided at its meeting yesterday to approve detailed plans for 11,500 housing units in a new neighborhood to be built in north Ashkelon, and also a plan for 2,400 units in Or Yehuda, to be built on the site of the Tel Hashomer military base, which the IDF is vacating.

The huge Ashkelon project is part of the roof agreement signed a month ago between the Ministry of Finance, the Israel Land Authority, and the Ashkelon municipality. The residential units will be in buildings 7-20 floors high, and 30% of the units will be small apartments.

The plan also provides for construction of an industrial area in the east of the new neighborhood close to the railway and route 4, a transport hub consisting of a railway station and a bus station, which will serve the whole of the northern part of the city, construction of a new interchange that will connect the north of the city with route 4, a 450 dunam (115 acre) park, a commercial strip along the central street, and kindergartens and schools. The plan was drawn up by Armon Architects and Town Planners for the Israel Land Authority.

The project in Or Yehuda will cover 350 dunam (88 acres) will be in the north of the town. The units will be of different sizes, with 20% of them defined as small apartments, and there will be commercial and industrial areas, and also green open space.
