Swiss combat jets were scrambled to escort the Israeli plane en route from New York to Tel Aviv.

Two Swiss combat jets were scrambled this morning to escort an El Al Israel Airlines Ltd. (TASE: ELAL) plane following a bomb scare. The crew of flight 002 inspected the plane's passengers and contents without any indications of a bomb and the flight landed at 1 pm at Ben Gurion Airport.

The Swiss combat planes took off around 09:30 am (Israel time) from the vicinity of Schaffhausen, near the German border. The passenger plane was en route from New York to Tel Aviv.

Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation spokesman stated that the plane continued its flight and that the reason for the alert remains unknown. Scrambling combat aircraft to accompany planes under threat is part of a procedure in these cases and the military aircraft are obliged to establish eye contact with pilots in the cockpit in order to ensure all is well.
