Transport Minister Yisrael Katz is considering renaming Tel Aviv's Ayalon Highway after Shimon Peres.

Minister of Transport Yisrael Katz is considering naming the Ayalon Highway after Shimon Peres. The idea has come to the attention of the minister after gaining momentum on the web for the past few days.

On Sunday, while visiting Peres' seven-day mourning (shiva) at the Peres Center for Peace, Katz spoke about the idea. It was eventually decided that the minister would meet with the Peres family after the holiday in order to discuss the issue.

During the shiva, reporters asked Katz whether he had already considered naming the Ayalon Highway after Peres, following massive support on social networks. Katz replied, "I think that Peres has many rights to Israel's transportation infrastructure, and have scheduled a meeting with the family after the mourning period."

In the 1970s, Peres was minister of transport for over three years. He came up with the plan to divert the course of the Ayalon River, which is waiting to be implemented.
