Lebanon Liaison Unit Commander Killed in Security Zone Explosion

Other fatal casualties besides Brigadier General Erez Gerstein, were "Voice of Israel" northern correspondent and two soldiers, were killed.

Commander of the Israel Defense Forces unit for liaison with Lebanon, Brigadier General Erez Gerstein was killed this afternoon in an explosion in the security zone in Lebanon. Ilan Ro’eh, correspondent in the north for "Voice of Israel" and two soldiers traveling in the same vehicle, were also killed.

The convoy in which the men were traveling was on its way from Kfar Arnon to Kfar Ka’urkabeh. On the outskirts of Ka’urkabeh, an explosion was heard close to the vehicle in which Gerstein was traveling. The explosion penetrated the armored vehicle, mortally wounding Gerstein. He, and the three other passengers in the vehicle, were killed.

This afternoon, there were exchanges of artillery fire and large IDF forces were deployed in the area. A great deal of Air Force aircraft and helicopter activity was also evident in the region.
