The Central Region district planning committee, headed by Ruth Yosef, who is responsible for the district in the Ministry of the Interior, has decided to deposit the "Thousand Compound" plan in Rishon Lezion for objections. The plan includes space for the construction of 4,900 new housing units and 1.2 million sq.m. zoned for business.
The plan covers a 1,500-dunam (375-acre) area in southwestern Rishon Lezion near the Moshe Dayan railway station and three planned light rail lines (the Brown, Green, and Red Lines).
The plan is designated in its current format to include an industrial area containing high-tech buildings, offices, businesses, restaurants, research and specialized education institutes, leisure facilities, and housing.
The residential construction rights in the plan include 800 student housing units, 600 sheltered housing units, 1,000 80-sq.m. apartments, and 2,500 125-sq.m apartments.
The plan was originally slated to include less than 3,000 housing units, not 4,900. However, the Rishon Lezion municipality, which initiated the plan, was asked to add housing units by the steering committee established by the Ministry of the Interior in 2012 to examine the plan.
