90% of Israelis shop online

A Visa study by Nielsen found 5% more Israelis buying online than last Passover.

A study by Nielsen for Visa Europe has found 90% of cardholders are buying online this Passover, 5% more than Passover last year. 46% of Israelis will shop online for themselves or for a family member, using a payment card.

The study found that 67% of all credit cardholders buy goods or pay for services online at least once a month, and that only 10% of all cardholders do not make any online purchases or payments.

67% of respondents said that they shop online because of lower prices, and 57% mentioned the convenience of not have to look elsewhere. 45% of respondents cited a wider selection of goods than at Israeli retailers, 36% cited a larger variety, and 32% cited speed.

The proportion of Israeli online shoppers who usually buy from Israeli websites fell to 40% from 47% in September 2013, and the proportion of online shoppers who said that the buy equally from Israeli and foreign websites rose to 33% from 25%.

More men than women pay with credit cards: 76% of men use credit cards several times a week, compared with 64% of women. Credit card use also rises with age, peaking with the 40-49-year olds, 80% of whom use credit cards several times a week.

32.5% of purchases at foreign websites in 2013 were for flight tickets, travel agencies, clothing, hotels, books and CDs for a total of NIS 661 million. The hottest online shopping day at foreign websites was Cyber Monday on December 2, with NIS 10.5 million in transactions, double the daily average.

“Visa Europe surveyed its customers’ purchasing habits and their readiness to shop online. The survey results indicate that increasingly more Israeli consumers shop online using their Visa cards, both for convenience and price-related reasons, and they do so with a sound sense of security," said Visa Europe Israel Country Manager Oded Salomy.

The survey included a representative sample of 525 individuals from the adult Jewish population in Israel in an effort to gauge the public attitude in Israel toward Internet purchases ahead of the Passover holidays.
