The National Planning and Building Committee for Priority Housing Areas, headed by Ministry of Interior director general Shuki Amrani has approved for deposit a new plan in the city of Ashkelon. The plan includes 9,500 new housing units, 20% of which will be small apartments, as in every new plan that has been approved in recent years. The new plan is for land in the north of Ashkelon, and includes new schools and a 450,000 square meter park as well.

According to the National Planning and Building Committee Law that was passed by the outgoing government, some of the housing units in the plan will be designated for long-term rental.

According to the plan, residential buildings between 7 and 20 stories tall may be built, as well as commercial areas, and public buildings. The plan also includes an office park, adjacent to the train tracks and Road 4, and a transportation hub, which will in the future include a train station and a central bus station, and will serve the northern part of the city. Additionally, according to the plans, the new neighborhood will be connected to Road 4 via a new planned junction.

The Ministry of Interior said, “The employment, commercial, and public buildings are intended to answer to the needs of the residents of the new neighborhood, but also all the residents of Ashkelon, with an emphasis on an educational campus where there will be three high schools, elementary schools, and daycare centers.”

. Minister of Interior Gilad Erdan said in response to the approval of the plan for deposit, “We continue to increase the offering of apartments and to flood the real-estate market. This is the way to reduce housing prices, which will make possible for thousands of families to buy homes.”
