Viz.ai's solution instantly compares a patient's scan to hundreds of thousands of other scans.

Another artificial intelligence (AI) company has announced a financing round. In this case, AI is used to assist in emergency medical cases. Viz, which uses AI to improve treatment of stroke victims, has completed a $7.5 million seed round from Innovation Endeavors, Eric Schmidt's venture capital fund, among others.

"The development of computer science, particularly in machine learning, enables us to rethink the way medical treatment is given," says Innovation Endeavors founding managing partner Dror Berman. "The Viz team is helping doctors solve acute medical problems, such as stroke."

May is the US National Stroke Awareness Month. According to the US National Stroke Association, a person suffers a stroke every 40 seconds in the US. Stroke is the leading cause of preventable disability, and the fifth leading cause of death in the US. "When the brain is injured, every second matters. Viz's vision is to dramatically shorten the time from when the patient asks for help until he receives the treatment suitable for him," the company says in its announcement. "Imaging-based medical diagnostics is the basis for diagnosing the medical problem as accurately as possible."

Using AI, Viz's method instantly compares a scan of the patient to hundreds of thousands of other scans, thereby creating patterns for medical conditions. Viz's technology can divide the scans into different categories, thereby helping doctors to make the right decisions more quickly and reducing the likelihood of missing something when the scan is examined.

Viz was founded by three experts from different parts of the world, as the company says in its announcement: neurosurgeon Dr. Chris Mansi from the US; Israeli Professor of Statistics David Golan, who specializes in AI and deep learning networks; and Dr. Manoj Ramachandran from the UK.
