Passenger traffic in January-May was up 15.6% over the same period of 2013.

Ben Gurion Airport handled 1.3 million international passengers during May 2014, 13.8% more than in May 2013, the Israel Airports Authority reports. Passenger traffic in January-May was up 15.6% over the corresponding months of last year.

The airport will handle 212,630 on 1,771 flights during the Shavuot holiday this week, 30% more than last year. The top five destinations during the holiday are Turkey, Italy, Russia, the US, and Greece.

The Airports Authority attributes the increased passenger traffic to the Open Skies agreement with the EU and the runways upgrade to handle more flights, which however has added to the number of Israelis suffering from jet noise.
