Postponing tax payments for southern residents pushed up the July deficit.

The effects of Operation Protective Edge in July can be seen in the July budget deficit which nearly quadrupled to NIS 2.3 billion, up from just NIS 400 in July 2013. The high budget deficit followed the postponement of tax payments for residents of the south.

According to the Ministry of Finance Accountant General's Division the budget deficit in the first seven months of the year was NIS 6.4 billion compared with NIS 10.6 billion over the same period last year. The budget deficit for the past 12 months ending July is 2.7% compared with the 12 months ending in June.

Government expenditure in July was NS 26.3 billion and since the beginning of the year it has totaled NIS 141.1 billion, up 3.8% over the same period last year.

Tax revenues in July were NIS 22.4 billion. An estimated NIS 400,000 in tax payments by southern residents that should have been paid in July is still owed.
