The Tel Aviv Fast Lane, on Road 1 covering the final 13 kilometers to the entrance to Tel Aviv, is becoming too popular. The company running the fast lane announced this morning that it is cancelling the toll for cars travelling on the road to the free car park, from which there are free buses into Tel Aviv, only to discover that the car park is full.
Drivers travelling along the first section of the fast lane to Tel Aviv won't be charged," the company said referring to the section between Ben Gurion airport and the Shappirim Interchange.
The decision was made following an instruction from the Derech Eretz Highways Management Corp., the authority overseeing the project. The decision is in force for at least the next two years. The second section from Shappirim to the Kibbutz Galuyot Interchange still requires drivers to register their cars and pay a toll.
The change is due to the fact that the 2,000 space car park is nearing full capacity and drivers will be forced to return to Road 1 and pay without having received the full service offered.
In 2014, 135,000 journeys were made on the Fast Lane (including vehicles exempted the toll) each month. The company said there was a 20% rise in cars with four or more passengers who are able to use the fast lane for free. The fast lane began operating in 2011.
