A 2% cut is proposed in order to finance Operation Protective Edge and its consequences.

With the cease-fire with Hamas having held for six days, the government will hold its weekly meeting this morning in the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council. Ministers will discuss a proposal to change the order of priorities in the 2014 budget and for the financing of Operation Protective Edge and its consequences. Ministers will vote on an across-the-board spending cut of 2% to finance these costs.

Within a week, a multi-year strategic plan will be brought before the government for developing Sderot and settlements bordering the Gaza Strip to the tune of NIS 1.3 billion, spread over five years.

Under the proposed spending cut, NIS 500 million will be cut from the education budget, NIS 43 million from health, and NIS 243 million from the transport development budget. In addition, NIS 69 million will be cut from local authority budgets.

Ministers will also vote on an allocation of NIS 940 million to finance measures for bolstering the civilian population in the settlements on the Gaza Strip border and NIS 196.6 million for one-time expenditure on improving civil defense in those settlements.
