Israel's national theater joins the discount travel agency in a new venture offering NIS 20 tickets for theater shows.

The Daka 90 group is teaming up with Israel's national theater to offer last-minute tickets to its shows for some NIS 20 starting Thursday.

When purchased less than 24 hours ahead of a scheduled show at Tel Aviv's Habima Theater, the price reflects a 90% discount of a face value ticket. The tickets can be ordered on Daka 90's specialized website.

The rationale behind the new offering is the basic fact that an empty theater ticket is purely a financial loss, which is why many theaters around the world including the national theater in London allow theatergoers to purchase last-minute tickets for a substantial discount.

Each day that tickets remain or previously-purchased tickets are returned, they will be sold for only 10% of the face value, meaning from time to time single seats or small batches may open up that are not only on the outskirts of the theater.

The face value price of theater tickets can reach NIS 200, though it is unlikely most theatergoers pay that high a price. Theater tickets are sold through various channels, including through consumer groups, whose members pay between NIS 45-65 for many shows.

"The initiative, which offers cheap tickets the day before, is part of a spontaneous consumption culture which is only expanding," said Daka 90 VP Dana Lavie. "It part of our brand expansion to other content fields which offer significant value to last-minute purchases."

She said the new program would expand to other consumer sectors for both services and products which would benefit from spontaneous consumption.

Habima's director, Odelia Friedman, said: "The joint venture is an expression of one of the most important parts of Habima national theater's vision that culture would intersect with all interested parties, at whatever price they can afford. At a time in which the cost of living weighs heavily on most Israelis, we found an original way to offer an attractive price to allow our audience to see more culture in general and more theater, in particular."
