The workers are protesting the plan to build new ports and sell a minority stake in the Ports Co.

Haifa Port workers began a wildcat strike this morning at 10 am in protest against the promotion of the plan to build new ports in Haifa and Ashdod.

The Haifa Port workers committee is striking following the decision to offer a minority shareholding in government companies including the orts Company.

Haifa Port management decided to immediately turn to the Haifa District Labor Court to obtain a back-to-work order.

There are currently six ships docked at the port although no ships are waiting to enter the port.

The strike began at the same time as the cornerstone laying ceremony for the new Ashdod Port attended by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He said, "Competition is an international language which is good for everyone. Competition lowers raw material prices and the cost of living."
