Avi Nissenkorn is joining a political party for the first time.

Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel) chairman Avi Nissenkorn is joining the Zionist Union, his first expression of political affiliation, while retaining his position as Histadrut chairman.

Zionist Union chairman Isaac Herzog and Nissenkorn are expected to meet later today, and will probably issue a statement about Nissenkorn's joining Herzog's party. The Histadrut issued no response to the report.

MK Itzik Shmuli (Zionist Union) welcomed Nissenkorn's decision to join the party, saying, "The Histadrut is the flesh and blood of the labor movement, and a social leader like Nissenkorn is welcome in its ranks. In recent months, the Histadrut chairman has proved unusual sensitivity and concern in his position, above all towards the truly disadvantaged - the minimum wage workers, people with disabilities, contract workers, etc. I am confident that by joining forces, we can pave the way to dramatic changes in the not-too-distant future."

Zionist Union faction chair MK Merav Michaeli said, "I was very glad to get a call today from Nissenkorn, who notified me that he was joining the Labor Party. He is a true partner for the great change we will lead. Welcome, Avi, how nice of you to come.
