Histadrut elections set for Tuesday

Incumbent Histadrut chairman Avi Nissenkorn is running for reelection against MK Shelly Yachimovich.

MK Shelly Yachimovich's (Zionist Union) election campaign for Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel) chair against incumbent Avi Nissenkorn should have made tomorrow's elections the most significant event of the week in the public and media theater. The visit to Israel by US President Donald Trump, however, has diverted public attention away from the campaign. This fact should be particularly disturbing for Yachimovich, who needs a high voter turnout, especially among Histadrut members who do not work at major employers.

530,000 Histadrut members are entitled to cast two votes tomorrow: one for the head of the organization, and one for a Histadrut Party list.

Histadrut elections are held once every five years, most recently in 2012, when Ofer Eini ran successfully for a second term against MK Eitan Cabel (Zionist Union), who recently became Yachimovich's partner in the Bayit Hevrati (Social Home) faction. Eini resigned three years before the end of his second term, and the organization's elected council selected Nissenkorn as chairman until the next elections.

Yachimovich's headquarters claims that its internal figures indicate that she will win, but they represent only a Facebook poll and another clearly unrepresentative poll by a journalist on Twitter. Nissenkorn's headquarters, on the other hand, are showing polls by Mano Geva and Mina Tzemach showing that Nissenkorn leads Yachimovich by 52% to 38%.
