Holiday mayhem as Israelis hit the highways

The Tel Aviv-Jerusalem highway was closed in both directions after a bus burst into flames.

Road 1, the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem highway, was closed in both directions on Wednesday morning, after a bus burst into flames near Neve Ilan. 100,000 Israelis departed today for trips to nature reserves for the holiday, jamming the roads.

In the Galilee and on the Golan, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority announced the national parks and nature reserves at Banias, Tel Dan, Beit She'an, Givat Hashlosha, and Springs Park were full, and advised holiday-goers to avoid Nahal Amud and Gamla because of the crowds. In central Israel, parks at Caesarea, the Ramat Gan National Park, and Ein Hemed in the Judean Mountains were thronged. Mamshit Park in the Negev is also crowded.

There were confrontations this morning on the Temple Mount between Palestinians and police, after dozens of young men began throwing stones and firecrackers at the police, after Muslims worshippers entered the site for prayers. The police fired tear gas in response. The Temple Mount has been closed to visitors.
