The plan also includes a new railway station and commercial space.

The Southern District Planning Committee this week approved for deposit a plan for moving Israel's southernmost airport and zoning a compound for hotels, leisure and tourist attractions combined with municipal commerce and residential housing. Under the plan, the new railway tracks to Eilat will run through the compound, and the new railway station will be built.

The plan includes 700 dunam (175 acres) of land allocated to new hotels with 2,070 rooms along Highway 90. At the same time, a residential section will be built in Eilat along Highway 2 with 1,000 housing units. The plan also provides for a 1,700 meter-long outdoor pedestrian mall and a 275-dunam (206.25-acre) plot zoned for public buildings and open spaces, mostly in the southern part of the area near the beach.

The Israel Land Authority (ILA) explained that this compound was designated to connect two parts of Eilat: the northern tourist section and the western section, creating an urban continuity for families and tourists visiting the city.

ILA CEO Bentzi Lieberman said, "I welcome the committee's decision, which moves ahead with the evacuation of the airport. This change, which has been talked of for many years, will lead to implementation of the ILA plan for residences, tourism, and hotels, and make a major contribution to Eilat's development.

The ILA initiated the plan. The architect is Isaac Halfon.
