Likud number 2 Gideon Sa'ar wants to devote time to his family and seeks new challenges.

Minister of the Interior Gideon Sa'ar, a leading light in the Likud party, announced last night that he was quitting politics. At a pre-New Year toast for Likud activists, Sa'ar, who reached number two spot in the Likud primaries, said that over the past two years he had weighed resigning, and had now decided to take time out from political life. He said that he intended to resign from the government and from the Knesset after the coming Jewish holiday season.

Sa'ar's wife, broadcaster Geula Even, recently gave birth to a son, and Sa'ar said that he wished to devote time to his family. Sa'ar's professional background is in the law and the media.

"After considering the matter, consulting, and thinking carefully, I decided to take a break from political life," Sa'ar said, "I now wish to live a life different from life in public affairs, to deal with new and different challenges, perhaps to enjoy myself, don't be angry with me. I'm leaving my post but I'm not leaving Likud."

Another Likud star, Moshe Kahlon, resigned from politics before the last election, and is now expected to make a comeback at the head of a new party.

"Globes" reported in the past that Sa'ar intended to quit, but he denied it.
