The Google subsidiary will offer its content creators the services of several translation companies, including Israel’s Tomedes.

Despite the growing competition it faces from Facebook, YouTube remains the most significant video content platform in the world. With more than a billion users and an increasingly rapid upload rate, the company has been trying to bridge the gaps posed by a worldwide service available in 76 different languages.

The company recently announced that, on average, more than 60% of video viewership comes from outside the country in which the creator of the content resides, meaning it is likely that two of every three viewers may not share the same native language as the uploader.

Given that common scenario, the company announced it will allow creators to choose among a number of translation options for their videos, to allow them to reach a wider audience.

The first option is to let the community pitch in and translate the videos. YouTube also offers the services of three professional translation firms including one Israeli company named Tomedes.

Tomedes has been offering professional translation services to businesses for eight years; it has worked with thousands of companies and organizations across the world using its staff of 15,000 professional translators.

YouTube will offer its users translation services for the title, description, and subtitles in the 76 languages which YouTube supports.

For Tomedes, the YouTube announcement marks yet another joint project with a global Google company; two and a half years ago, the firm was selected alongside another Israeli company, One Hour Translation with a number of others to participate in an initiative that offered professional translation services for Android developers, to increase the apps’ visibility on the Google Play Store.

Tomedes CEO Ofer Tirosh said, “We are proud of the three years of fruitful cooperation with Google, which is now branching out into new services. As of today, 6% of Tomedes’ business comes from foreign companies and groups and I am convinced YouTube’s new translation service will provide us exposure to new clients abroad.”
