100,000 local authority employees are protesting non-payment of a NIS 1,000 grants the Histadrut insists was agreed with the Finance Ministry.

The Histadrut (General Federation of Labor in Israel) today announced that the country's local authorities would call a general strike starting from midnight on February 9. The reason for the strike is a delay in payment of a NIS 1,000 one-time grant to local authority workers as part of the framework agreement recent agreed between the Histadrut and Ministry of Finance.

Some 100,000 municipal, local authority and regional authority employees will strike with all local authority services hit including education, and planning and building committees. A work dispute on the matter was called two weeks ago.

Histadrut chairman Avi Nissenkorn said, "It is inconceivable that the framework agreement won't be fully paid to local authority workers and we won't let this happen."
