Use of private vehicles is increasing, use of buses and taxicabs is falling, and road congestion is breaking all records, according to 2015 transportation figures published today by the Central Bureau of Statistics. The figures highlight the government's ongoing failure to promote the use of public transportation in Israel.

"Road congestion continues to increase," the Central Bureau of Statistics says. According to the published figures, the number of vehicles on the road has grown 69% since 2000, while the area of the roads is 40% higher, and the length of roads has gone up only 17%. The distance traveled by all vehicles has grown by 50% since 2000, while the average distance covered per vehicle fell 13%.

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics figures, the average annual distance covered by private vehicles rose from 16,200 in 2014 to 16,300 in 2015, a 0.9% increase, while the average distance covered by buses fell by 0.4%, and the average distance covered by taxicabs fell 1.3%.
