There are now three lanes in each direction on Road 1 between Sha'ar Hagai and Shoresh.

The widening of the notorious six kilometer section of the Tel Aviv - Jerusalem highway between Sha'ar Hagai and Shoresh has now been completed. Since the weekend three lanes have been open in each direction with safety shoulders added for drivers who breakdown on the mountain pass stretch of Road 1. Before work began, there were only two lanes in each direction and no shoulders whatsoever, so it was enough for any breakdown or accident to cause traffic chaos.

The route of the new stretch has straightened out some of the sharper curves and steeper gradients and also includes an ecological bridge, so that animals can cross the highway.

Work continues further east along Road 1 with the Harel tunnels and a new interchange set to replace the Harel Interchange at Mevasseret Zion before the end of the year. The eastbound section of the Motza bridge will also be opened in December after two of the three lanes on the westbound section of the bridge was opened at the end of May.
