The interchange is part of a major upgrade for the 6.5 kilometer stretch of Road 38 between Sha'ar Hagai and Bet Shemesh.

Netivei Israel National Transport Infrastructure Ltd. and the Ministry of Transport have announced that the Shimshon Interchange near Beit Shemesh will open on Thursday morning. The interchange will replace the traffic lights at the junction of Roads 38 and 44.

Road 38 connects Beit Shemesh with the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv Highway at Sha'ar Hagai, while Road 44 stretches westwards to Ramla and Tel Aviv. Before 1967, Shimshon Junction was a major milestone on the road between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem but the route fell into disuse after the road was able to pass through Latrun.

However, in recent years with the massive development of Beit Shemesh, Shimshon Junction has once again become prone to jams. The opening of the Shimshon Interchange is part of a major upgrade for the 6.5 kilometer stretch of Road 38 between Sha'ar Hagai and Bet Shemesh, which when completed will have two lanes in each direction.
