The supermarket chain is closing 15 branches as part of its streamlining plan.

Supermarket chain Shufersal Ltd. (TASE:SAE) has begun firing 800 employees. In recent days the company invited dozens of employees for hearing prior to being laid off as part of its wide reaching streamlining plan.

As "Globes" revealed, Shufersal is closing down 15 branches, which each employ an average of 42 workers. This will shed 630 employees from the chain's workforce. In addition, 170 employees are being fired at the company's head office, of which 70 employees have already been dismissed.

Shufersal CEO Yitzchack Abercohen told "Globes" that the company plans reaching agreements with employees on voluntary retirement and he insisted, "I won't fire one employee that doesn't want to go."

The layoffs are part of Shufersal's streamlining plan after difficult financial results over the past year. In the second quarter of 2014 alone, the supermarket chain lost NIS 157 million and losses are expected in the coming quarters.
