Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon promised assistance after days of constant mortar fire from Gaza.

After a weekend of constant rocket and mortar fire, Israeli settlements bordering the Gaza Strip are preparing for evacuation. During a visit to southern communities yesterday, Minister of Defense Moshe Ya'alon said that the state would assist residents who sought to leave the area in order to obtain relief from the stress. People who approach their local authority for assistance under the scheme will be lodged in youth hostels at the state's expense.

Ya'alon made his visit following the death on Friday of four year-old Daniel Tregerman after he was hit by shrapnel from a mortar shell fired from the Gaza Strip at the Sha'ar Hanegev area. Ya'alon met heads of local authorities in the south and promised to help residents who wished to be evacuated. He said the Ministry of Defense would assist residents who felt insecure in the settlements.

Meanwhile, following rocket fire on northern Israel from Lebanon and Syrian territory at the weekend, Israel has sent a message to UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon) stating that the Lebanese and Syrian governments will be held responsible for maintaining quiet. At least five rockets were fired from Syria towards the Golan Heights, one of which damaged a power line, and one from Lebanon at the Western Galilee.
