Treasury plans zero import duty on cheese

The step will greatly reduce prices of imported cheeses.

The Ministry of Finance is planning a dramatic move to lower prices for dairy products. Hebrew daily "Yediot Ahronot" reports that the ministry plans to eliminate import duties on hard cheeses.

The step will greatly reduce prices of imported cheeses, which can compete against local cheeses, such as "Emek" made by Tnuva Food Industries Ltd. and "Noam" made by Tara Dairy Ltd.

The original Locker proposal to reform the dairy market, from six months ago, was supposed to lower prices in two ways: by raising the import quota to 9,500 tons over four years; and to reduce the import duty by 10% a year, from 70% in 2011 to 20% in 2016.
