Beersheva will be the first big city in which a fiber-optic network is deployed.

Unlimited (formerly IBC) is conducting a fiber optics trial in Tirat Hacarmel, in conjunction with internet provider 018 Xphone and Triple C. The trial is a precursor to the commercial deployment that Unlimited will begin implementing in the coming weeks.

In the trial, customers will be connected for free, in order to train the fiber-optics deployment field team, and to check how the work is carried out in real-world situations. Tirat Hacarmel near Haifa was the location for previous Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) (TASE: ELEC.B22) trials as well.

Unlimited has essentially begun the process of launching its commercial operations over recent weeks, and has recorded interest on the parts of consumers who have approached them via the company website and early-registration promotions. Beersheva will be the first big city in which work will begin, in parallel to some smaller towns.

Unlimited’s deployment is not nationwide, meaning the company will not provide coverage to entire cities across all of Israel. Instead, the company works on a demand model, and, therefore, the work will be much more moderate and measured - so anyone who is expecting a third Israeli communications company option will need a lot of patience.

In the trial, customers are connected at speeds of 100 Mbps by optical fibers on IEC infrastructures. Some customers even enjoy speeds of 1 Gbps, and Unlimited is connecting schools and public institutions to the new network as well.
