Wed: Leumi leads TASE losses

Bank Leumi fell sharply on news of a widening US tax authority probe but Elbit was up on a Canadian deal.

The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE) fell today. The Tel Aviv 25 Index fell 0.66% to 1,434.03 points, the Tel Aviv 100 Index fell 0.54% to 1,284.87 points, and the BlueTech 50 Index fell 0.54% to 304.30 points. Turnover was NIS 855.4 million.

The TASE fell despite gains on European markets.

In the foreign currency market, the Bank of Israel set the shekel-dollar representative exchange rate at NIS 3.754/$, down 0.292% on yesterday's rate, and set the shekel-euro representative exchange rate at NIS 4.782/€, up 0.019%.

In the bond market, both long-term Shahar unlinked shekel government bonds and long term Galil CPI-linked government bonds fell. The corporate bond benchmark Tel-Bond 20 Index fell 0.09%.

In the stock market, Bank Leumi (TASE: LUMI) fell 1.98% for the biggest fall on the Tel Aviv 25 Index on the highest trading volume, following news of further allegations by the US authorities regarding helping American customers to evade taxes. Other banks also fell with Bank Hapoalim (TASE: POLI) down 0.35% and Mizrahi Tefahot Bank (TASE:MZTF) down 1.43% but Israel Discount Bank (TASE: DSCT) rose 0.21%.

Strauss Group Ltd. (TASE:STRS) rose 0.94% for the largest gain on the Tel Aviv 25 Index but fellow food company Osem Investments Ltd. (controlled by Nestle SA (SWX:NESN)) (TASE: OSEM) fell 0.82%.

Elsewhere Elbit Systems Ltd. (Nasdaq: ESLT; TASE: ESLT) rose 0.75% on news of a satellite communications contract with the Canadian army but the telecom companies fell hard.

Bezeq Israeli Telecommunication Co. Ltd. (TASE: BEZQ) was down 1.86%, Cellcom Israel Ltd. (NYSE:CEL; TASE:CEL) was down 1.26% and Partner Communications Ltd. (Nasdaq: PTNR; TASE: PTNR) was down 1%.
