65% of shoppers take care to buy only kosher food survey

Food Industries Association chairman Abraham Kringel: The increase in shoppers who insist on glatt kosher certification has been paralleled by an increase in the number of products with these certifications.

Despite the growing strength of independent supermarket chains that sell non-kosher food to the Russian community and longtime Israeli residents, a survey for the Manufacturers Association's Food Industries Association has found that purchases of kosher food has increased. Tiv Taam Reshatot Ltd. is the most prominent of these independent chains.

Food Industries Association chairman Abraham Kringel, who serves as deputy general manager of Osem Investments Ltd. (TASE:OSEM), said 65% of Jewish households in Israel make sure to buy kosher food, 2% more than in 2001.

Geocartography Knowledge group conducted the survey, which also found that an increasing number of people take care to buy food with “glatt kosher” certificates, and will not buy food with ordinary kosher certifications from the Chief Rabbinate. 66% of those buying only kosher products in the current survey were satisfied with kosher certifications from the Chief Rabbinate, compared with 74% in a survey four years ago.

Kringel said the increase in shoppers who insist on glatt kosher certifications has been paralleled by an increase in the number of products with these certifications.

The main glatt kosher certifiers are Badatz Ha’eda Hahaherdit, Badatz Harav Landa of Bnei Brak (which certifies Coca-Cola drinks in Israel), and Badatz Harav Rubin.
