Israel asks EU to fund Haifa-Jenin-Jordan railway

The EU is considering financing a railway from Gaza to Ashdod Port.

The Ministry of Transport is asking the European Union (EU) to finance joint Israel-Jordan-Palestinian Authority (PA) transportation projects. The ministry is asking for an initial €30 million for the projects.

Minister of Transport Meir Sheetrit presented the plan to a conference of transport ministers last week in Morocco. The first project is a double-track railway connecting Haifa to Irbid in Jordan, through Beit She’an and the Sheikh Hussein bridge, branching off to the Jenin region. The EU is giving the project top priority.

Under an agreement between Israel, the EU, and the PA, the EU will transfer €2.5 million to a joint transportation office that will develop and plan joint Israel-PA projects. Among other things, the EU is considering financing a railway from Gaza to Ashdod Port.
