Bird flu jitters boost gefilte fish sales

Fearing avian flu, many people will eat fish rather than poultry at the Passover seder.

The panic over bird flu has caused sales of poultry products to fall, affecting the food that will be served for the Passover Seder. M. Prop & Son CEO Gidon Regev said sales of gefilte fish had already risen 15%. M. Prop & Son Ltd. is the Israeli distributor of B. Manischewitz Co., the largest US producer and marketer of kosher food products.

Regev predicts that Israelis will eat 450 tons of gefilte fish patties at the Passover Seder, amounting to 4.2 million patties. He said the increase in sales was because the much of public would prefer eating fish at the Seder, rather than poultry, due to fears about bird flu.
