Alvarion in WiMAX deals in Alaska and Japan

Alvarion signs with Hitachi Communciations Technologies and with AT&T Alascom.

WiMAX solutions developer Alvarion Ltd. (Nasdaq: ALVR; TASE: ALVR) is extending its global reach, announcing a contract with AT&T Alascom to provide its BreezeMAX solution in Alaska, and an agreement to develop WiMAX solutions with Hitachi Communication Technologies Ltd. in Japan and other international markets.

Alvarion and Hitachi Ltd. (NYSE:HIT; TSE:6501) subsidiary Hitachi Communication Technologies Ltd. will jointly develop broadband mobile wireless access systems using Mobile WiMAX technology for the Japanese and international markets.

Hitachi Communication president and CEO Eiji Aoki and Alvarion president and CEO Tzvika Friedman signed the agreement in Tokyo yesterday.

Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has developed the license policy of 2.5 GHz band. WiMAX is considered as the most likely candidate for broadband mobile wireless access systems. A base station, which can transmit broadband data stably, and the mobile management technology, which can realize seamless handover between base stations, are needed to establish WiMAX technology.

Hitachi Communication and Alvarion will develop total system solutions, which will combine base station technology of Alvarion with the mobile gateway technology, construction, and maintenance technology of Hitachi Communication. Hitachi Communication will aim for further global expansion in the next generation broadband wireless business.

Alvarion also announced a contract to provide AT&T Alascom with Alvarion's BreezeMAX equipment as part of AT&T Alascom's deployment of WiMAX broadband in Alaska. AT&T announced that it will begin providing WiMAX technology in Juneau, followed, in 2008, by other communities in Alaska. "We are proud to be selected by AT&T Alascom," said Tzvika Friedman, president and CEO of Alvarion.
