Acre's Tel Napoleon to be restored

The project will cost NIS 10 million.

Acre's Tel Napoleon will be restored at an investment of NIS 10 million, including construction of a seafront promenade. The Acre municipality and the Israel Antiquities Authority will build observation points and a 5,000-seat open-air theater.

Tel Napoleon derives its name from the artillery batteries that Napoleon built on site during his failed siege of the city in 1799. The tel is located southeast of Acre's Old City. Archeological digs in the tel have found objects dating back as far as Egypt's Middle Kingdom 12 Dynasty (1991-1802 BCE) and the Late Bronze Age.

The new seafront promenade will stretch one kilometer to Acre's two existing promenades, but in contrast to their urban styles, the new promenade will strive to preserve the coastal habitat and topography, including rehabilitating coastal vegetation that has vanished from the area.
