Motorola mulls new R&D center in Jordan Valley

Motorola VP Richard Nottenberg met Minister of Finance Avraham Hirchson today.

Communications equipment giant Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT) is planning to set up another development center in Israel. Motorola executive VP chief strategy officer Richard N. Nottenberg today met Minister of Finance Avraham Hirchson. Sources inform ''Globes'' that they agreed that Motorola would consider setting up the new center in the Jordan Valley.

Motorola Israel, founded in 1964, is run by general manager Elisha Yanay. The company manufactures communications equipment, including radios, modems, and handsets, mostly at its plant in Arad. Motorola Israel had $820 million in sales in 2005, including $350 million in exports.

The Ministry of Finance and Motorola reportedly agreed that the government would subsidize part of the salaries of the new center’s employees. Nottenberg said he would try to persuade other US companies to open R&D centers in Israel. He frequently visits Israel, and is responsible for Motorola’s acquisition of, and investment in, technologies outside the company. These investments include eight investments in wireless and data communications and security in Israel over the past 18 months.
