Egged buys 170 environmentally friendly buses

The new buses also have low chases, making them easier for the elderly, handicapped and mothers with strollers.

Egged Israel Transport Cooperative Society Ltd. has bought 170 buses that meet EU exhaust emissions standard 3 for NIS 200 million. The environmentally friendly buses will enter service in a few months.

EU exhaust emissions standard 3 is considered the most advanced current air pollution standard. Engines that meet the stricter EU exhaust emissions standard 4 will come on the market in 2007, at which point they can be bought and imported to Israel.

100 of the new Egged buses will operate on the Haifa-Jerusalem, Beersheva-Jerusalem, and Haifa-Tiberias routes. 70 buses, including 40 articulated buses, will operate on urban routes. The new buses also have low chases, making them easier for the elderly, handicapped and mothers with strollers.
